Just 13 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, you'll find the Batu Caves, a massive limestone cavern. Discovered in 1878, the caves surround exposed geological formations that appear to be over a million years old. There are 272 steps leading to the cave, representing the 272 sins of Hinduism. Hindus believe that ascending these steps will cleanse them of their sins, drawing a steady stream of visitors. The forests flanking the steps are home to numerous native wild monkeys, offering another fascinating attraction.
Completed in 1965, the National Mosque is the only mosque in Malaysia that allows visitors to visit its interior. A symbol of the nation's commitment to Islam, it features a modern 18-pointed star-shaped dome and a 73-meter-tall minaret. The 18 points represent Malaysia's 13 states and the five pillars of Islam. The mosque houses a prayer hall that can accommodate 8,000 people, a mausoleum, a library, and conference rooms. Shoes must be removed upon entering, and those wearing revealing clothing must borrow a robe at the entrance. *On Fridays, only worshippers are allowed to enter, so only the exterior can be viewed.
